Marin Cilic and Rafael Nadal
World no. 4 Rafael Nadal won his 22nd major and 14th French Open title when he defeated Casper Ruud in the finals of the 2022 French Open. Nadal beat Ruud in straight-sets in the finals while also dropping a bagel in the third set in an emphatic win to assert his dominance at the Stade Roland Garros for yet another time. The win over Ruud gave Nadal his 112th win in his 115th appearance in the Grand Slam and it was just one of the many achievements and records that the Spaniard achieved upon winning the title.
This year’s French Open was the first edition organised in normal conditions for the first time since 2019 as the 2020 edition was played in October and not in May due to the Pandemic. The 2021 edition was also delayed by a week after its initial schedule due to a rise in Covid cases and full crowds were not allowed for the majority of the tournament keeping the Pandemic in mind.
These factors affected the prize money as well but this year, the tournament offered €43.6 million in prize money, an increase of 26.87% from 2021 and a rise of 2.20% from the 2019 edition. The winners in the singles event received €2,200,000. the runners-up got €1,100,000 while the semi-finalists took a cheque for €600,000.
