An old video of the father of the iconic Williams sisters, Richard Williams, has surfaced on the internet where he is seen confronting an interviewer. The interviewer was seen trying to disturb the confidence and mental well-being of Richard’s 14-year-old elder daughter, Venus Williams.

Venus, then 14, was sitting down with then-ABC News correspondent John McKenzie to discuss an upcoming match. As the journalist was dwelling too much on her upcoming match, her father intervened and engaged in a heated conversation with the interviewer and almost came to the point of threatening him. 

Alright. Cut right there if you don't mind. And let me tell you why. What she said, she said it with so much confidence the first time, but you keep going on and on.

The father of the iconic sisters didn’t stop there and continued:

You've got to understand that you're dealing with an image of a 14-year-old child. And this child gonna be out there playing when your old a** and me are gonna be in the grave.

Richard Williams, the father and initial coach of his daughters who was instrumental in shaping the careers of two extremely talented female athletes ever, was known to for his brash and shrewd behavior. He often put the interest of his daughters before anyone else and always stood up for Serena Williams and Venus Williams.

As the interviewer was trying to get inside the head of Venus before a match of hers, her father did not appreciate this repetition of such a question and immediately stepped in to defend his daughter and claimed that this was not good for the mental health of a 14-year-old girl. He also lectured the journalist for his behavior and told him to listen to whatever she had to say.

Richard Williams played a huge role in Serena and Venus Williams’ professional lives

The Williams sisters were blessed to have such an encouraging father who was instrumental in helping them reach where they are. He started training the two from a very young age and fought against all odds to get them the best resources to make them World champions in tennis.

The two sisters have not disappointed their father as both have gone on to become one of the greatest tennis players and athletes of all time, inspiring a generation of young women all over the World. While Serena retired last year, winning 23 singles Grand Slam titles to her name, Venus is still playing with 7 singles Grand Slam titles under her belt.
