Marco Trungelliti slams Roger Federer for his indifference to the inequalities in tennis while praising Novak Djokovic for his efforts in an exclusive interview with the Argentine publication La Nacion.

He discussed how the top players like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal never took a stand for the lower-ranked players. The Argentinian player blamed them for indirectly being part of the system that exploits the players ranked low. He claimed that the ‘legends’ never raised their voice or used their platform for the betterment of the players as a whole.

The 33-year-old explicitly mentioned Roger Federer in his statements. He claimed that Federer in particular disappointed him because, if he wanted, he could have really changed things. The 236th-ranked player was also critical of the Laver Cup, expressing that it was the only contribution he had made. Also eluding that it is a contribution that only benefits the top-ranked players.

However, Trungelliti was all praise for Novak Djokovic, who took the initiative to form the PTPA (Professional Tennis Players Association). The association aims to help speak about the rights of all the players in tennis and bridge the pay gap between the players. He was also quoted as praising Vasik Pospisil, who was also instrumental in the formation of PTPA. He met both players during the US Open and thanked them for their contributions to the tennis community.

The former world No.112 said, “You can’t be complicit in the fact that 80-100 people make a living from tennis. It’s what has always bothered me and will continue to bother me. As players, they can be very good, but as humans trying to improve the system in general, they seem very poor to me. This is what Djokovic and Pospisil are doing today as well. Plus, all that work at the PTPA takes up time and energy.”

Marco Trungelliti discusses the financial condition of lower-ranked players

Marco Trungelliti talked about the financial conditions of the players at the bottom. While the players at the top boast millions of dollars in prize money and sponsorships, the lower-ranked players are struggling to make ends meet. It is especially difficult for tennis players outside the 200 to survive.

He talked about the recent hike in the Challengers prize money, saying that it is better but still embarrassing for ATP standards, considering that we just witnessed the ‘golden era’ of tennis.

It also raises the issue of match-fixing, which the Argentinian had to deal with firsthand. Tennis players, when pushed to the brink of financial desperation, have to resort to match-fixing to support themselves.
