During a recent interview with the ATP Tour, 20-time Grand Slam champion and tennis legend Roger Federer revealed that he follows the sport closely even after retirement. As per the Swiss himself, he tries to keep his inner ‘tennis kid’ alive despite not being a part of the professional tennis world anymore. He is currently attending the ongoing ATP 500 at the Halle Open in Germany as the guest of honor.
“I’m very surprised at how often and how frequently I check scores,” he said. “Three times a day maybe. Then of course all of a sudden there’s times when I check out for like a week, and then I’m with the kids and I’m travelling, and you forget about everything around you. But for the most part, actually, I’m really into it.”
During the interview, Federer also remarked that in spite of seeing little action on the court since retiring last year, he manages to keep himself updated with the latest happenings in the sport.
“I haven’t booked a court yet, called up a friend and said ‘Let’s go play tennis’,” said the former world no. 1. “Hopefully down the road, I can play some exhibitions again, when the body is healed up and all ready to go, but for the time being I’m just really happy away from the game. But like I said, I follow it still pretty closely.”
In terms of tennis history, Federer and the Halle Open go way back. The Halle Open has been Federer’s go-to tournament in preparation for Wimbledon and has undoubtedly played a huge role in his grass-court success. That’s not all; Federer has won a record 10 titles here.
Continuing his train of thought, he further added, “I don’t know the first time I ever came here, maybe 22 years ago, and I played 18 years in those years. More than just a partnership, it’s also become a friendship over the years.”
