Roger Federer announced his retirement at the Laver Cup last year, where he paired up with Rafael Nadal in his farewell doubles encounter. Although he is not a part of Team Europe this year, he has traveled to Vancouver to extend his support for the team. The Laver Cup takes place over the coming week in Canada.

In his press conference, the Swiss former player heaped praise on the concept of the Laver Cup. He also spoke about the camaraderie he formed with the likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The trio all competed at the three-day event last year, where Team America emerged victorious.

Roger Federer believes that the Laver Cup gives an opportunity to younger players to absorb knowledge from experienced professionals. The Swiss tennis player competed in the inaugural edition of the event in 2017, and he has been one of the prominent faces behind its success. “Seeing the camaraderie of people from different countries coming together in a team, like me and Rafa or me and Novak, has been wonderful,” said Federer.

Generally, both teams feature some of the finest players in the world. As such, Roger Federer believes that budding players are able to attain a lot of information from great talents, prominent coaches, and experienced players like himself, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal.

“What’s been, for me really important, is that the players go away with loads of information in their backpacks & they can apply it in their day-to-day practice, their day-to-day life on a tennis court & think back to the Laver Cup that they learned something from the likes of John McEnroe or Bjorn Borg, or speaking to Rafa or me or Novak or Laver,” he added.

Team Europe has fielded a depleted side this year, owing to the last-minute withdrawals of Holger Rune and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Arthur Fils was called in as a replacement for Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was thought to lead the line for his side. On the other hand, the defending champions, Team America, have fielded a very strong side featuring the likes of Frances Tifaoe, Taylor Fritz, and Ben Shelton, among others.
