Roger had injured his knee during his run at the Championships and it was later diagnosed that he would need to undergo another surgery if he wishes to have a healthy life after he is done with tennis as well. With no other option suitable for the 39-year old, he prioritised the surgery so as to give himself another chance before the damage was beyond repair for him.

The surgery left him on crutches but he has slowly recovered and recently posted pictures of him in training preparing for a return to action as soon as possible. Amidst this, he had earlier confirmed that he will be looking to play the 2022 Laver Cup and he will be joined by longtime rival and now friend Rafael Nadal with both representing Team Europe.

Post the Laver Cup, which will be held in London, Roger will return to Switzerland to play in the 2022 Swiss Indoors, an ATP-500 category event making it his first confirmed start on the Tour meaning that even if he fails to recover in time for the 2022 Wimbledon or the other events till Laver Cup, he would nevertheless be playing in the Swiss Indoors that is scheduled from 24th October to 30th October in Basel. The news was confirmed by writer Rene Stauffer who has written books on Federer as well.

Federer will be celebrating his 41st birthday in August this year and given multiple surgeries on his knee which has become his Achilles heel, Roger might be looking to bow out from the Tour in front of his home fans in Basel where the event will take place. Given the glorious career he had so far, he would not wish to retire when he can’t play anymore but bid adieu when he can do it at his own will and walk out gracefully.
