Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer might have hung up his racket, but the craze for the 42-year-old is at the same level as when he was an active player on the tour. A testimony to this was seen when Federer landed in Shanghai for a special ceremony planned for him. While Shanghai Masters director Michael A. Luevano went himself to receive the 20-time Grand Slam winner, fans gathered in large numbers outside the stadium and gave Federer a rousing reception.
Roger Federer was named the first-ever ‘Icon Athlete’ when it was announced in May that the Swiss would be given the special title when the tournament commences. Now, as the ATP 1000 tournament is into its business end with the quarterfinal stage underway, Federer will be felicitated with this special first-of-its-kind title.
As soon as the timeline for Federer’s ceremony was confirmed, tennis fans in China as well as on the internet got excited. It was clearly visible in the way Federer was welcomed at the arena. Fans gathered in large numbers and cheered for the Swiss when he entered the arena. Federer reciprocated the love by signing autographs and taking selfies.

The preparations to welcome Roger Federer in Shanghai have been top-notch. While the Swiss maestro received a rousing reception from the fans gathered outside the stadium, Federer’s signed collectibles have been put on display at the official souvenir store on site.
The collection has Federer’s pictures with the titles that he won in different editions of the tournament. Apart from that, duffle bags, side bags, tumblers, and caps signed by the 42-year-old have been put on display. It is worth mentioning that the Swiss will be facilitated after the first quarterfinal.
Speaking of Roger Federer’s performance and records to his name at the Shanghai Masters over the years, the Swiss won two titles- 2014 and 2017. Also, Federer is the oldest to have won a title, a feat he achieved in 2017, at the age of 36 years and 67 days. The Swiss had defeated his nemesis Rafael Nadal in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to claim his second title at the ATP 1000 tournament. Federer’s last appearance at the Shanghai Masters came in 2019, wherein he bowed out after losing to Alexander Zverev.
