Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer made a return to Wimbledon on Day 2 as guest of honor, to a rousing crowd. This marked his first appearance at his favorite major since his retirement in September 2022.
The Centre Court crowd at Wimbledon expressed their excitement and admiration for Roger Federer as he entered the royal box. The Swiss maestro, fresh from his appearance with Coldplay in Zurich, was overwhelmed by the warm reception.
Federer, accompanied by his wife Mirka, took his seat next to Catherine, the Princess of Wales, and the emotional moment left him visibly moved. Although Federer had returned to Wimbledon last year to celebrate the Centre Court’s centenary, this year’s festivities held even greater significance, since it marks his first appearance after retirement.
In an interview with CNN, Roger said, “Last year was the 100-year anniversary of Centre Court. I remember saying on court that I hope to see you next year. I truly meant that. But I had to decide. Where will I retire? How painful will it be? Or how much of a celebration will it be? It ended up everything & more for me. It was beautiful. Surrounded by Rafa, Djokovic, Murray, Borg, McEnroe, Laver, Edberg. My team, my family. It was a very nice end.”

Federer speaks on injury struggles before and after retirement
Federer’s return to Wimbledon came after a year filled with physical challenges and setbacks. He shared his struggles, stating, “Last year was hard because I was still trying to play but struggling with my knee so bad. Funny enough, I don’t miss so much being out on court anymore just because I know the body couldn’t do it. But It’s good that I can’t (play anymore), which then lets me watch and follow tennis as a total fan.”
As Federer embarks on this new chapter of his life, he has found contentment in his post-tennis journey. Federer’s transition from player to spectator has been remarkably smooth, and he finds joy in planning personal moments with his family and friends.
As Federer bids farewell to professional tennis, the tournament carries on with other, newer contenders vying for the Wimbledon crown. Novak Djokovic, the reigning champion, is poised to match Federer’s record at Wimbledon and secure his 24th Grand Slam title.
While the Swiss maestro’s absence is deeply felt, his legacy continues to inspire and motivate the next generation of players. Wimbledon still remains a stage where dreams are realized, and the tradition and prestige of the tournament are sure to endure.
