Roger Federer once received a huge fine for swearing at the umpire during his infamous US Open final loss to Juan Martin del Potro
Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro
Swiss maestro Roger Federer is one of the greatest players of all time and has won almost everything in tennis. He has a whopping 103 titles to his name out of his 20 titles are grand slams. Despite winning so much, Federer has also lost some very important matches too- be it the 2008 Wimbledon Final to Rafael Nadal, the 2019 Wimbledon final to Novak Djokovic, or the 2009 Australian Open final to Nadal.
But the match that he lost which he regrets the most is the 2009 US Open final. Federer, who had won his 15th major title at Wimbledon in 2009, was gunning for his record 16th grand slam title at the US Open and was the favorite to win the final against Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.
Federer is often regarded as the classiest tennis player of all time and his incidents of getting angry on the court or having a breakdown on the court are very rare. But Federer had a little moment in that final at the end of the second set. He dropped an s-bomb at the chair umpire Jack Garner because he felt like Del Potro was taking too long to make a challenge and the umpire allowed it.

At the end of the second set, Del Potro’s late challenge overturned an “out” decision which gave him an edge as he went on to break Federer’s serve and took the second set. Due to his antics, Federer was fined $1,500 for using foul language and having an outburst on the court.
Federer went on to lose the match in 5 sets 3-6,7-6(5),4-6,7-6(4),6-2 as Del Potro claimed his first and only major title of his career. To date, Federer thinks that he should’ve won that final and considers it to be his most regrettable loss.
