Roger Federer once yelled ‘SHUT UP’ at the crowd during his heated quarterfinal clash against Juan Martin del Potro at the French Open
Roger Federer
Roger Federer retired from professional tennis last month and in the history books, will go down as one of the greatest players of all time. He ended his career with 20 major titles and was the first man in tennis history to break the ’20’ major mark. Federer is one of the most loved players in all sports and this is mostly because of his grace and class.
He tends to treat his opponents with kindness and the utmost sportsman spirit and it is very rare for him to have a breakdown on the court or get angry for some reason. But during the 2012 French Open quarterfinal against Juan Martin del Potro, Federer had a small lapse in concentration and was frustrated with his level.
He dropped the first set and the second set was very close. Federer thumped the ball into the net during an important rally and was livid with himself. He took out his frustration on the crowd and yelled “Shut up” at them. He went on to lose the second set in the tie-breaker and was 0-2 down.
But using all his years of experience, he managed to bounce back and won the next three sets to win the match in five sets 3-6,6-7(4),6-2,6-0,6-3 to book a semifinal date with Novak Djokovic. Federer went on to lose the semifinals in straight sets against Djokovic.
The angriest moment in Roger Federer’s elite career- the 2012 French Open quarterfinal
Federer is known for his charisma and it is pretty rare that he loses his cool on the court. And hence the ‘Shut Up’ rant came as a shock to many. John McEnroe, who himself was very famous for his anger during his playing days, said that this is the angriest he has seen Federer. “That’s about as angry as you’ll see Federer,” he said.
