Tennis star and former player Roger Federer made a surprise visit along with his wife, Mirka Federer, on the second day of Wimbledon. The 8-time Wimbledon champion was welcomed by a cheering crowd at the Centre Court. Later, he went to the women’s side to watch defending champion Elena Rybakina playing against American player Shelby Rogers. He made his way to the Royal Box where he was greeted by Kate Middleton, and that’s when he made a faux pas.

Its known that certain protocols have to be followed whenever you are greeting a person of the royal family. One of them is not initiating a handshake unless the royal person extends their hand for one. And the other is obviously not greeting the person with a peck on the cheeks no matter how close you are. But the former player seemed to forget this binding rule and leaned in to kiss the Princess of Wales.

Despite the minor gaffe, Princess Kate expertly sidestepped the issue, graciously pulling away as Federer moved in for the embrace. Undaunted by the blunder, she continued to enthusiastically applaud the great player as he took his seat. While Federer’s gesture raised a few eyebrows, the Princess of Wales displayed her ability to handle such situations with elegance once again.

This is not the first time Kate had handled such a situation with grace. Later in the day, Kate, who is also the royal patron of the All-England Lawn Tennis was found engaged in lively conversation with Federer’s wife.

Princess Kate has a strong connection to the sport as the royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis. It’s no wonder, then, that she’s developed a true friendship with tennis legend Roger Federer. Federer even attended the wedding of Kate’s sister, Pippa, in 2017 alongside his wife.

Following Federer’s eighth Wimbledon victory, Kate greeted him in the Royal Box with three kisses on the cheek. Some fans were taken aback by this act, as royal expressions of affection are generally more guarded. However, the enthusiastic greeting demonstrated the affectionate bond they shared.

Federer’s charming relationship with the royal family does not end there. It has been revealed that the Swiss tennis legend has personally taught Kate’s son, Prince George, at the Middleton family home in Bucklebury. Federer has spoken kindly of Prince George, calling him a “sweet boy”, and praising his tennis talents, expressing his excitement at seeing the young prince’s interest in sports.
