19-year-old Coco Gauff created history on Saturday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium as she came back from a set down to become the first American teenager to win the country’s major tennis tournament since Serena Williams in 1999. The 6th seed defeated the newly crowned No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to clinch her first Grand Slam title. With the win, she also became the first American to win a US Open singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017.

Gauff received widespread acknowledgement on social media for her stunning achievement. Perhaps the most significant congratulatory post from the tennis world came from the 20-time Grand Slam champion and Swiss legend Roger Federer. Sharing his old pictures with the young American, Federer put a post on Instagram captioned, “Inspirational win @cocogauff ?,Been watching your ? and following you for years. Your hard work and mental toughness is great for our sport. You shine brighter than ever.”

Gauff was quick to reply as she thanked Federer for the post along with a GOAT emoji. The American teen is quite active on social media and regularly shares posts on TikTok and hosts Instagram live. Earlier this day, responding to a question on what she would do with the prize money, Gauff said on Instagram Live, “Somebody said pay off debts… I’m 19, I don’t have any debt.”

Gauff also received a congratulatory message from US President Joe Biden. “Congrats to U.S. Open Champion @CocoGauff. You electrified Arthur Ashe stadium and the entire nation – the first of more to come and proof that anything is possible if you never give up and always believe. You’ve made America so proud.” Biden shared on ‘X’.

“People don’t think I see it but I see it. I’m very aware of tennis Twitter. I know y’all’s usernames, so I know who’s talking trash and I can’t wait to look on Twitter right now!” Gauff said, taking an apparent dig on social media fans in the post-match press conference. The American teen would’ve loved her time on ‘X'(Formerly Twitter) if she logged in, as she received widespread acknowledgement.

The former President of the US Barack Obama shared a post on ‘X’ captioned,“Congratulations to US Open champion,@CocoGauff! We couldn’t be prouder of you on and off the court – and we know the best is yet to come.” The former first lady Michelle Obama shared, “So proud of you, @CocoGauff! Your hard work and grit was on display throughout this tournament. This is your moment!”

Gauff said in the Instagram Live that she would probably treat herself to a proper vacation out of the country as she had been around the world but hadn’t ever fully disconnected from tennis.
