20-time Grand Slam title champion Roger Federer retired last year, following his last few matches at the Laver Cup. In the final match of his professional career, Federer partnered with his arch-rival, Rafael Nadal, against Team World’s Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. Although he lost his final battle, the Swiss stepped off the court as one of the best players the tennis world has ever seen.
However, many of Federer’s fans hope for the former World No. 1 to return to the tennis court. The Swiss recently made a surprise arrival at the Shanghai Open event during the quarter-final clash between Andrey Rublev and Ugo Humbert on Friday. Following the commencement of the match, Federer was honored with the ‘Icon Athlete Award’ in a ceremony.
“When you know the knee doesn’t allow you to play at this level, the mind doesn’t even go there that I could be on the court right now. So you just enjoy tennis for what it is,” Federer said as he answered a question about his potential comeback.
“I follow results almost daily, I like to see what is going on out there. It’s not even a thought,” he stated further as he talked about his connection with the game. (H/T: ATP Tours)
The Swiss, who has claimed the title twice (in 2014 and 2017), also spoke about his return to Shanghai after his retirement. “I had a great time, but I dive back in. I have come here to Shanghai, and I feel really happy,” the former No. 1 stated. Talking about his new life in the past year, Federer said, “I go with the flow, and I like that no day is ever the same, so it is great”.
Is Roger Federer regular at the gym now?
In a recent interview in Shanghai, Roger Federer talked about a new habit he has picked up. “I am trying to go to the gym four times a week, and I can’t believe I am actually doing that,” he said. “I rent the space at home and put the machines in, and I got it the week after the Laver Cup in London, so it was like, after my career, I finally had a gym,” the Swiss stated.
“[It was] a little bit weird once I retired, so now I have to use it, so I do that well, and I don’t play so much tennis anymore, so I have to be a little bit more careful with what I eat and stuff,” the Swiss revealed further. “I would still like to play some exhibitions down the road, so I want to stay in shape and try to look good a little bit.”
