Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer, who last played in the 2022 Laver Cup and hung his racket after the tournament, has arrived in Vancouver for the 2023 edition of the tournament. Federer, who was a part of the group that started the event in 2017, touched down on Tuesday and also met the players taking part in the tournament.
The Swiss maestro featured in the first five editions of the tournament and won three of them playing for Team Europe. Nevertheless, although Federer is not on the tour anymore, he has openly expressed his support for Team Europe. The 42-year-old also revealed how excited he is to see Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev partner together.
“I get very excited about Laver Cup doubles because there are usually teams that we haven’t seen in the past so I would like to maybe see Hurkacz and Rublev play together,” said the 42-year-old Swiss great. “On the World side, there’s tons of doubles teams with Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Taylor Fritz … I just like superstar combinations.”
The pictures of Federer at the Rogers Arena went viral on social media in no time with fans expressing their excitement to see the superstar back on the court although not in a playing role.
Roger Federer wants Team Europe to reclaim the title
Roger Federer, who himself played a crucial in Team Europe’s three titles at the Laver Cup wants them to reclaim it after they lost it to Team World last year. The 42-year-old could not hide his love for Team Europe when he was asked about who he wanted to win the title this time around.

“There’s something in me that’s Team Europe,” he grinned. “I’m happy if World wins, don’t get me wrong — but somehow, I can feel it deep inside, I want Europe to win.” (via Laver Cup website). Federer also expressed a desire to be the captain of the team in the coming years. “Maybe one day, I’ll be the Captain of the team. There’s no plans as of now, but I think that could be quite nice,” the Swiss said.
Notably, the 2023 Laver Cup kicks off on 22 September, with two singles matches in the day session and a single and a doubles match in the night session. Team World has announced the likes of Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Felix Auger-Aliassime while Team Europe has Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, Gael Monfils, and others.
