The Met Gala is one of the most important fashion events of the year. Fans get a chance to watch their favorite stars in spectacular dresses for the event. However, sometimes these dresses are designed by fashion designers using animal skin and bird feathers.
This time respected non-profit organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has urged the jury members for the Met Gala event to ask the celebrities and fashion designers to not wear dresses that may be made up of materials derived from animals or birds. One of the jury members is Roger Federer.
Roger Federer and Swiss running shoe brand On have designed a vegan sneaker. The Swiss legend is one of the most respectable athletes in the world. Hence, PETA believes that he can influence his supporters, fans, and celebrities and keep them away from animal fur and bird feathers.
Also, with the six-time Australian Open champion’s presence in the jury, PETA hopes that he can atleast influence other tennis superstars to not wear fur and feathers to this event. Serena Williams wore a Gucci silver bodysuit with embellished stars and, on top, a feather-laden cape with a long ombré train for the Met Gala 2021. PETA would want to avoid such scenes again.
“The high-profile people in the spotlight at this wonderful event wield enormous influence on the viewing public, so we’re asking that you implement a policy to permit designers only to use vegan feathers, faux fur and simulated skins, for the good of both animals and the environment,” PETA gave a statement regarding this issue.
“It’s past time for designers to get more creative—it’s what fashion is supposed to be all about—to be more innovative, and to stop relying on birds and other animals who suffer terribly for their designs,” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated.
“PETA is hopeful that the Met Gala sponsors will show compassion to all animals by asking designers to stick to fabulous featherless materials, faux fur, and simulated skins,” he continued.
The theme for this year’s Met Gala is legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.

PETA seeks to change the look of Met Gala
This may be the first time the eight-time Wimbledon champion has become a part of Met Gala jury. However, this is not the first time the demand to not use materials made up of animal skin or bird feathers has come up before the jury. But this time with Roger Federer on the jury board, the organization too is hopeful to make a positive impact on the celebrities and fashion designers.
“The high-profile people in the spotlight at this wonderful event wield enormous influence on the viewing public, so we’re asking that you implement a policy to permit designers only to use vegan feathers, faux fur and simulated skins, for the good of both animals and the environment,” PETA stated in a letter addressed to the jury members.
Besides Roger Federer, the Met Gala jury also includes Spanish actress Penelope Cruz, Albanian singer Dua Lipa, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and screenwriter Michaela Coel. Hence, this year’s Met Gala like always is expected to be a parade of glitz, glamour and atrocious fashion but hopefully animals and birds will not become victim for the enjoyment of few celebrities.
