Swiss tennis coach Severin Luthi seems to be enjoying a period of tranquillity after what has been a rather busy 15 years guiding arguably the greatest Tennis player ever Roger Federer. In a recent interview with Blick, Luthi spoke of the effect the Swiss Maestro’s retirement has brought about in his and Federer’s lives.

Luthi said that while Federer is glad to have retired from tennis gracefully, he was far from bored of tennis. He explained that Federer’s retirement was simply him listening to his aging body. “He no longer has the stress of building up tension before tournaments. I’m sure he’ll appreciate that. Because tennis itself was never the problem. He probably would have played to 100 if he could have,” said Luthi.

Retirement has given them both some much-needed time to spend with themselves and family. However, it seems clear that in spite of retirement, Luthi and Federer are still very much busy promoting tennis across the world and in other ventures. “He (Roger) can now focus on other things: on the family, building the house, his foundation and the sponsors.” Luthi too, has been busy spectating tournaments all across Switzerland as part of his ambassadorship duties.

Luthi hinted during the interview that he has not dismissed the possibility of coaching another player in the future if certain conditions are met.  “I still don’t want to rule it out. Several factors must be right for me. Because at some point you will ask yourself the question for whom you will leave the house again.”

Luthi added that all the coaching offers notwithstanding, it will take a good, hardworking player for him to consider coaching again. “The player has to be a good guy; it just has to fit as a person. In addition, he should be hungry and willing to learn – he must be able to listen.”

Luthi’s life after retirement remains just as busy as Roger’s. Since retirement, Roger has been making a transition to be a celebrity athlete whose influence goes beyond his sport. Luthi on the other hand, is busy spectating tournaments, hoping to find the one player who could fill in Federer’s shoes someday.
