20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer said his goodbye to the sport after 24 years of a professional career. A former World No. 1 and the second most successful men’s singles champion in the history of the sport, Federer received an emotional farewell at the 2022 Laver Cup.

In front of some of his oldest colleagues and family members, Federer was given a fitting tribute. In attendance were Federer’s parents Robert and Lynette who both shed tears seeing their son receive love and admiration from all present at the O2 Arena.

Roger’s parents were recently quizzed by Tagesanzeiger and the two revealed which defeat of their son hurt them the most. Both picked different matches but the opponent remained the same, Novak Djokovic, one of Roger’s arch-rivals in the second half of his career.

The 2019 Wimbledon final will always haunt Federer as he was in touching distance of winning his 21st Grand Slam title. With 8 titles to his name, Federer retires one short of matching Martina Navratilova‘s all-time singles record of 9 titles at the All-England Club.

Had he managed to convert the match points, Federer’s legacy would have been further increased as Djokovic won his 21st major this year at Wimbledon while Rafael Nadal achieved the feat at the 2022 Australian Open becoming the first man to do so in Men’s singles.

The same was the situation at the 2010 US Open. Having won the Grand Slam for 5 consecutive years from 2004 to 2008, Federer lost his first-ever US Open finals at the hands of Juan Martin del Potro at the 2009 US Open in a thrilling 5-set battle.

Federer looked on course for a 7th successive US Open finals appearance but Djokovic fought back down from match points in 2010 before losing to Nadal in the finals. The 2011 US Open semis were a similar story but fortunes changed for Djokovic in the finals defeating Nadal in the finals that year in a repeat of the 2010 finals.
