Before Novak Djokovic came onto the scene and the legendary ‘Big Three’ did not exist, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were the epitomai of professional tennis. The pair share a close relationship with each other. At Federer’s last ever tournament last year, their bond could be discerned as the duo succumbed to tears.

The Swiss and the Spaniard have shared an impeccable friendship as well as a rivalry. Their uncharacteristic camaraderie gave rise to many fun moments off-court. In contrast, the pair’s on-court enmity provided audiences with unforgettable performances. With the Monte-Carlo Masters underway, it is fair to recount one of their iconic moments in the city.

During their early days of rivalry, Federer chauffeured Nadal around Monte-Carlo in 2006. The year proved to be quite instrumental in the development of their relationship. While Federer aimed to carve his name in tennis history, Nadal was one of the biggest opponents that the Swiss faced during the season.

In the throwback video, Nadal can be seen enjoying himself in the passenger’s seat as Federer drove him around in a Mercedes. Despite merely being a teenager, Rafa had already formed an affinity towards the leading player at the time. Federer was the year-end No.1 in 2006, as he won 12 ATP titles, three of them being Grand Slams.

However, the retired player was no match for clay maestro Nadal, who triumphed against the Swiss in Monte Carlo. Rafa has come a long way since then, with eleven Monte-Carlo Masters titles under his belt. Nadal went on to win in Rome and Roland Garros as well against Federer. As prominent rivals in such a strenuous sport, the duo’s long-standing friendship is commendable.

In 2003, Rafael Nadal established himself at Monte Carlo by making an outstanding Masters 1000 debut at the age of 16. The 16-year-old beat the reigning Roland Garros winner on his way to the third round after earning a spot in the main event. Nadal stated he would never forget the tournament, saying it gave him a lot of confidence.

“I have great memories from Monte Carlo. It was my first notable tournament, and I played well, qualifying for the main draw and beating Karol Kucera and Albert Costa. I will never forget that, but I must improve and move further from that third round,” said the 14-time Roland Garros champion.
