Making Indian tennis proud is Rohan Bopanna, who played in the Australian Open along with his doubles partner Matthew Ebden. After a persistent struggle, the duo was crowned the champions of Australia as they won the doubles Grand Slam. 

Rod Laver Arena bore witness to a perfect display of tennis as the duo of Ebden-Bopanna took on Simone BolelliAndrea Vavassori in the finals.

From the get-go, both teams were on top of their service games. It was the serve master, Bopanna himself, serving very consistently at the age of 43, who started the serve for his team.

Continuing the momentum, the duo managed to steal the first tiebreak before stealing the first break of the match in the second set. After the break, it was Ebden who served for the championship, as he sealed the deal and became the first Australian to win the title at the 2024 Australian Open.

As Matt said, you definitely know how old I am. I’ve changed it a bit & said I’m a level 43, not age 43. obviously this couldn’t have been possible without a fantastic Aussie partner by my side. Thanks to Matt. We had a fantastic season last year. For me to win my first men’s doubles grand slam here at the Asian pacific grand slam, it’s totally a home slam.

The man of the moment, Rohan Bopanna, takes in the cheers after 21 years of persistent struggle. Coming from a country where tennis wasn’t as established, the 43-year-old fought his way through to become the World No. 1 in men’s doubles tennis.

The whole of India cheered for the duo of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden as they took home their first-ever Australian Open title.

Overjoyed by the victory, Bopanna thanked his partner for helping with the victory and hilariously calls the win a home slam. 

For me to win my first men’s doubles grand slam here at the Asian Pacific Grand Slam, it’s totally a home slam.

Despite having years of failure, the Indian kept his chin high, trying harder than ever before finding success with Ebden. While other Indians retired, Bopanna remained steady as a ship, keeping India afloat in the tennis world before getting immense success on the grandest of stages. 

From reconsidering his spot on the tennis roster to making a comeback, Bopanna stands as an idol to millions of people around the world. Even at a very late age, the 43-year-old man came in clutch for his country as he secured a first-ever Australian Open title. With this, he moves up to the No. 1 spot, standing high after years of struggle.
