The Russia-Ukraine War situation has made matters worse for everyone. Those who are directly connected are certainly paying the price. However, those who are not connected are also going through different trials and tribulations just because of their origins in those countries. Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva was recently stopped at the Warsaw airport and barred from entering the country.
In recent times, Russian and Belarusian Tennis players have been heavily booed on the court by the crowd. They have been asked awkward questions in interviews, and this is now normal for them.
However, being stopped at the airport and not allowed to enter a country is something new. Zvonareva was going to play in the Warsaw Open. Although she was traveling with a French Visa, her being a Russian has put her on the country’s undesirable people list, meaning she would not be allowed to enter the country.
This is what the authorities had to say, “After arriving from Serbia, the tennis player stayed in the transit zone of Warsaw Chopin Airport, and today after 1200, she flew to Podgorica.” Poland is one of Ukraine’s closest allies, and this proves their actions towards the Russian and Belarusian players. This will be a talking point for a while, and opinions will flood the net.

Vera Zvonareva’s 2023 in review so far
Once upon a time one of the best players on the tour, Zvonareva is now at the latter stage of her career. The 38-year-old is no longer the flamboyant singles player from Russia and fails to win matches in the singles draw. She is predominantly focusing on doubles to extend her career as much as possible. That’s working, as she is doing pretty well on the doubles courts.
2023 has been just that kind of season where there is a vast difference between Zvonareva, the singles player, and the doubles player. The singles player hasn’t had any sort of notable impact. However, the doubles player has continuously knocked on the doors of titles by making deep runs after runs. Can she win a Grand Slam at this age in the doubles category? If she does, that will be amazing. Her eyes will be on the upcoming US Open. The Hard courts may just give her a great chance.
