As the tennis season is going into its post-Grand Slam part and the eventual end is near, the race to the WTA finals is also taking shape. Out of the available eight spots, the top four performers of the season have already qualified. This includes all the Grand Slam winners of the season except the Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova.
The four qualified names who are in the top 4 spots are Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, French Open champion Iga Swiatek, US Open champion Coco Gauff, and the ever-consistent Elena Rybakina. The remaining four spots are open, and the race for them will make the coming months of tennis season interesting for the world.
Out of the already qualified four players, everyone except Elena Rybakina was part of the 2022 WTA finals as well. However, last year’s champion, Caroline Garcia, is not expected to qualify this year. In the final last year, Sabalenka was the one who lost to Garcia.
Race for the remaining spots continues in Women’s tennis
Apart from the four qualified players, the next knockout in the finals is American World No. 5 Jessica Pegula. She was also a part of the 2022 WTA finals, and she is expected to make it into the tournament this year as well. She has 4404 points, which is merely 1000 less than the fourth and already qualified player on the list (Elena Rybakina).
After Pegula, next on the list are the top two players from the Czech Republic. The Wimbledon champions are Marketa Vondrousova and Karolina Muchova. Both players have amassed around 3600 points and are expected to clear the mark in the coming months. As of now, number 8, and the last on the list is Tunisian star Ons Jabeur, who has missed her chances to win a maiden Grand Slam this year also.
Madison Keys and Petra Kvitova are in the 9th and 10th positions as of now. It will be interesting to see whether any of these players can come back from behind to make it to the WTA finals this year.
