Former World No. 1 Sania Mirza, currently in her final season as a Pro has her perfect farewell spoilt as an injury forces her to withdraw from the 2022 US Open which is set to commence on 29th August in New York. Mirza is a 2-time champion in the US Open as she won the 2014 US Open in Mixed Doubles with Bruno Soares and the 2015 US Open Doubles title with Martina Hingis while being the World No. 1 during her title run in 2015.
While Sania won just 1 title in th singles, she has 43 titles to boast in the doubles category with 3 Grand Slams also in them as she won the Australian Open in 2016 and the Wimbledon in 2015. The Indian ace however hasn’t achieved the Career Slam as she was the runner-up with partner Elena Vesnina at the 2011 French Open. Sania however won the French Open in Mixed Doubles in 2012 with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi but with the absence of Wimbledon, she again missed out on Career Slam while having won the Australian Open in 2009.
“It will change my retirement plans,”: Sania Mirza on her withdrawal from the US Open
Sania announced her withdrawal from the US Open via her Instagram handle where she put a message on her story. Having recently played in the WTA-1000 event in Canada a fortnight ago where she reached the semi-finals with Madison Keys before being ousted by eventual champions Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, Mirza had picked up an injury during the stay in Canada and as a result, she is now forced to skip the Grand Slam.
“Hi guys, a quick update/ I just have some not so great news. I hurt my forearm/elbow while playing in Cana da 2 weeks ago and obviously didn’t realise how bad it was until I got my scans yesterday and unfortunately I have infact torn a little bit of my tendon. I will be out for weeks and have pulled out of the US Open. This isn’t ideal and it’s terrible timing and it will change some of my retirement plans but I will keep you all posted. Love, Sania,” wrote the former World No. 1.
Sania had announced that this will be the final season of her career and the 35-year-old will call it quits on her glorious 19-year-long career. However, the last few lines where she talks about the change in retirement plans could possibly be a hint that she might not retire this season and could make an appearance at the 2023 Australian Open in order to go out from a Grand Slam, a fitting exit for a player of the highest quality.
