The American, Sebastian Korda finds a new friend in Melbourne Park as he makes it through to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2023. Earlier today, Korda won the fourth round of the major against the 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz in a five-setter. He won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(10-7) against the Polish.

The American kept his nerve in the final set tiebreak to win the match. On this occasion, during the post-match interview, he spoke about his new friend on the court and his new superstition that won him the tiebreak. Korda had some amazing wins in his bag going into his first quarterfinals. He won his third round against the 7th seed, Daniil Medvedev and today he won against Hubert.

Speaking on reaching his first major quarterfinal, he thanked his fans and the audience for their support throughout the week. When asked about his comeback during the match after the slow start he said he tried to stay calm and kept going. He also said he was happy about his performance it was a great result for him.

Speaking about the fifth set tiebreak Sebastian said “I got a little superstitious with the towel, the towel got me through it. Every time I went to the towel, I won the point. So I just kept going to my new friend over there in the blue box.”

Sebastian Korda makes it to his first Grand Slam quarterfinals

The first week of the Australian Open ended with another upset as Sebastian Korda wins against Hubert Hurkacz. With this win, the American keeps his hopes alive and goes into his first-ever quarterfinals. Sebastian is following in the footsteps of his father who won the tournament back in 1998. It was a heartbreak for the Polish who aimed to become the first ever Polish to reach the final eight of the major.

Sebastian got a slow start to the match as he lost the first set 3-6. However, he recovered pretty quickly and went on to win the next two sets. But unfortunately for him, Hurkacz came back stronger in the fourth set and won it 6-1. It was a roller-coaster tiebreak in the final set but the American kept his cool and won it 10-7. However, his next challenge is Russia’s Karen Khachanov on Tuesday.
