2022 hasn’t been ideal for Novak Djokovic in any aspect. The Serb was denied entry into Australia due to his vaccination status at the start of the season after which he wasn’t allowed to defend his Australian Open title. He started his season in Dubai where he lost to Jiri Vesely in the quarterfinal. He then started his clay season at Monte Carlo where he lost his opening match to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He received a first-round bye this week at Serbia and will take on Laslo Djere.
As for Djere, he had a terrible start to the 2022 season. He suffered a string of first-round loses at the Australian Open, Argentina Open, Rio Open and the Mexican Open before finally winning a match at Indian Wells. He won just a single match in the Golden Swing but bounced back in the clay season. In Morocco, he made it to the semifinals and then followed it up with a Round of 16 outing at the Monte Carlo Masters. At his home event this week, in the opening round, he defeated Hamad Medjedovic in straight sets 6-4,7-5 to book a date with Djokovic.
