Novak Djokovic defeated 2023 Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in the recent Cincinnati Open final. The Serbian saved one championship point to gain a victory against the World No. 1. The thrilling match ended with a score line of 5-7, 7-6(7), and 7-6(4). This was the longest match of the ATP Masters, spanning over 3 hours and 49 minutes. With this victory, the 23-time Grand Slam title winner became the oldest player to win the tournament, breaking 35-year-old Ken Rosewall’s record.

He has exceeded Rafael Nadal’s and Ivan Lendl’s records of winning 1068 matches, respectively. Djokovic is now the champion of 1069 matches. He is trailing Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors by a small margin to win the most number of matches.

The popular Serbian basketball player Danilo Andjusic tweeted in response to their post. He was visibly angry with the US Open organizers and criticized them for not allowing Djokovic to play. For context, the tennis star was in a bind for two years as he wasn’t allowed to play on American soil. Following Djokovic’s anti-vaccination stand, the US Open banned him from entering the country. The basketball player wrote, “He would win even more if you didn’t cheat.”

The Serbian ace Djokovic won the Cincinnati Open in remarkable fashion. The victory brought him his 39th ATP Masters 1000. He is now aiming for the US Open, where he can win his 24th Grand Slam title. However, Djokovic was gracious enough to appreciate his young rival, Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old had defeated Djokovic at Wimbledon this year.

Speaking about the World No. 1, Djokovic said, “You are an incredible person and a champion; congratulations on an amazing career. A lot of players never manage to reach those heights in their entire career.” He has also gone on to compare Alcaraz to the likes of a legend like Rafael Nadal. He said that whenever he plays against Alcaraz, he gets the same feeling he did when he was playing against Nadal in his prime.

The young Spaniard responded to the comparison by saying that if he is being compared to one of the greatest of all time, then he must be on a “good path”.
