Missouri residents saw a horrific incident unfold in front of their eyes as three people broke fire during the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade on Wednesday. As the people came out to celebrate the Chiefs’ historic victory at the 2024 Super Bowl, a fire broke out resulting in a death and quite a few injuries. Amid this chaos, Serena Williams‘ coach Rennae Stubbs has advocated for a gunless society.
Stubbs, who is an Australian citizen minced no words as she criticized the USA for allowing easy access to guns. She also called out the people of America for advocating such a policy and citing safety as the reason behind it. Stubbs claims that whoever feels safe in a gun society is out of their mind.
This shit doesn’t happen in Australia, why? Because we can’t access GUNS easily. It just doesn’t exist! So 4 those that feel safer in a “gun society” you’re outta your mind! Out of your mind! I don’t care what u say!!!! So don’t at me with 2nd amendment blah blah! It’s insanity!Rennae Stubbs posted on X.
Mass shootings becoming frequent in the US
While what Rennae Stubbs has suggested is a matter of debate, it is worth noting that mass shooting incidents have become too frequent in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 630 incidents of mass shootings across the US in 2023. This was the third year on the trot when the numbers crossed 600.
A mass shooting is an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed. The above-mentioned figures include shootings that happen in homes and in public places. The deadliest such attack, in Las Vegas in 2017, killed more than 50 people and left 500 wounded.
48,830 people died from gun-related injuries in the US in 2021, according to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s nearly an 8% increase from 2020, which was a record-breaking year for firearm deaths.
These incidents have led to a debate about whether the current laws around the possession of firearms in the country are sufficient enough to prevent such mishaps. While there have been people asking for a better law, a large section feels guns are necessary for self-defense.
