American tennis legend Serena Williams has an unmatched record of winning the most Grand Slam matches after losing the first set in women’s tennis history. Her record of 43 wins will be hard to beat in the near times as the nearest competitors are not so close in terms of numbers. The second on the list is Venus Williams and Chris Evert, each with 28 wins.
Serena’s 43 match wins include 2 finals as well –Wimbledon 2003 and Australian Open 2005. In Wimbledon 2003, she did a comeback against her sister venus Williams 4–6, 6–4, 6–2, and in the Australian Open 2005, Serena did it against compatriot Lindsay Davenport 2–6, 6–3, 6–0.
There have been narrations like “comeback king” given to male tennis players but if the title has to be given to a woman calling it “comeback queen”, the former American World No.1 is far ahead of her competitors theoretically.
Serena is having a very private life after her retirement from professional tennis this September. In the retirement announcement, she told that spending time with family will be her most important goal and she has been living with her husband Alexis Ohanian, and daughter that way with very less interaction in public events.
Serena Williams is arguably the ‘Greatest of All Time’
Serena Williams is one of the most successful tennis players and probably the greatest female tennis player that ever played this game. She won all the Grand Slams many times over in her career. She also won the Grand Slam Cup (now discontinued) in 1999, WTA Finals 5 times, and the 2012 London Olympics gold medal in the women’s singles event.
Her rivalry with her sister Venus Williams was the biggest crowd-puller in the early 2000s, with viewers chiming in for the ultimate clash. In doubles, the William sisters dominated by winning all the Grand Slams and three Olympic gold medals.
The sisters turned back the clock in the 2017 Australian Open final when they both faced off in a Grand Slam final for the first time after Venus‘ triumph in Wimbledon in 2008. They both have played against each other 31 times and Serena leads the head 2 head 19-12.
The 41-year-old got married to Alexis Ohanian in 2017 and they have a daughter together. The ceremony took place in New Orleans in 2017 and their french ball-themed wedding was the talk of the town.
