Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder and husband of Serena Williams, shed some light on the profits he made with his investments in cryptocurrencies and other stocks. The internet entrepreneur and investor disclosed that he paid only $15,000 for ether which is worth $80 million today.

Ohanian, who married the 23-time Grand Slam champion in 2017, quit his job at Reddit in June 2020. Since then he is focused more on his family. Now he revealed how the fortune he created through his early investments helped him pay for William’s 17-carat engagement ring.

In an interview with Forbes, he gave the financial details of his profits. Ohanian spent $15,000 to purchase about 50,000 tokens of then-fledgling ether in 2014, which would be worth about $80 million today if he had kept it all.

In the same interview, he revealed some of the proceeds went toward his wife’s expensive diamond engagement ring which is estimated to be worth around $3 million. Ohanian also donated a million dollars to former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick‘s non-profit Know Your Rights Camp.

The total net worth of Ohanian is estimated to be around $70 million dollars. In December 2022, Ohanian was named a 2023 Money Changemaker by Money magazine. Even after creating a fortune Ohanian believes he should have invested more. “In hindsight, I didn’t invest nearly as much as I should have,” Ohanian told Forbes.

Other than financial success, Ohanian is known to be dedicated to Serena and their daughter Olympia. In the same interview, Ohanian, who is of Armenian descent, spoke about how he is now trying to restore his connections to his roots. He recently acquired 3 Armenian carpets in an effort to connect his daughter to his family legacy.

“These carpets are for Olympia. And who knows any other kids we might have? Knock on wood, this is not a country I’m planning on fleeing. But I know not everyone has that opportunity,” Ohanian said.
