Former World No. 1 Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian has been actively involved in sports for a while now. His involvement has however been majorly in women’s sports for promoting the talent and the sports as they deserve to be.
He has made various investments in teams and leagues alongside Williams to attract new fans. Apart from this, Ohanian has also been a vocal feminist and has often voiced his opinion on various matters. The latest incident happened with basketball player Angel Reese.
Reese is currently a college basketball player for Louisiana State University’s LSU Tigers. She was instrumental in the Tigers winning the NCAA title, their first-ever. But unfortunately, things haven’t been good for the 21-year-old.
Following LSU’s loss that put them out of contention for retaining their NCAA title, Reese opened up on her struggles of the past year. She revealed being attacked numerous times on social media with racist slurs and threats being made against her. All of this has understandably taken a toll on her well-being.
Reacting to this, Ohanian was very critical of the hecklers and trolls. He took to his Instagram stories to call out the indecent behavior against the 21-year-old. He accepted that people can have contrasting opinions but the hate was unwarranted.
There is zero excuse for death threats and racist bulls**t Angel is subjected to. Be a decent sports fan: talk your talk, but don't attack athletes.Wrote Ohanian.
Angel Reese and LSU skip the national anthem before clash against Iowa
LSU’s latest match was a repeat of the 2023 NCAA finals as they took on Iowa Hawkeyes. While they were unable to repeat the result they achieved, it could well mean Reese’s last-ever college match ended in a defeat.
But before the start of the match, as the national anthem of the USA was played, the entire team of LSU was missing. Footages showed the Hawkeyes and others paying their respects to the anthem. But none of the Tigers could be seen.
This led to a massive outrage against the players and the team. Many celebrated their loss claiming they deserved it for skipping the national anthem. Following the defeat, Reese also opened up about her mental struggles due to the online hate directed towards her.
With a long career in professional basketball expected for Reese, it’s unfortunate that young players are brought down by these poor acts on social media.
