Serena Williams not making a comeback at Wimbledon, Naomi Osaka on the entry list despite her comments at Roland Garros
Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka
Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, was included on the Wimbledon singles entry list issued on Friday, but veterans Roger Federer and the Williams sisters were not. Last month, Osaka claimed she was “not 100 % sure” she would play in the grasscourt Grand Slam since the sport’s governing authorities’ decision to deprive the tournament of ranking points had diminished her motivation to compete. Last year, Naomi Osaka, 24, withdrew from Wimbledon after taking time off for “personal reasons,” just a month after abandoning the French Open due to media obligations.
The men’s ATP and women’s WTA stripped Wimbledon of ranking points after the grasscourt major decided to prohibit players from Russia and Belarus due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow refers to as a “special operation.” Belarus has served as an important staging ground for the invasion.
The Williams sister and Roger Federer miss out on the entry list
Roger Federer and the Williams sisters may not be able to compete at Wimbledon this year due to their exclusion from the entry list. Serena Williams hasn’t played on the WTA Tour since suffering an injury in the first round of last year’s tournament at the All England Club, and she’s had a difficult year. Meanwhile, Venus, the five-time winner, has not competed since competing in a WTA 250 event last August.
After undergoing knee surgery last year, Roger Federer is the other big star scheduled to miss this summer’s championships. With the 40-year-old presently on 20 major victories, his coach stated in March that a return to SW19 was doubtful. There were rumours that Federer was contemplating retirement, but he just stated in April that his recovery was going well. However, despite the trio’s exclusion from the entry list, they could all still appear as wild-card entries which have yet to be announced.
