Former World No. 1 Serena Williams has been more than a tennis player. The 23-time Grand Slam title winner became an icon very early in her career due to her success and bold personality, on and off the court.
Having ‘evolved’ from the sport at the 2022 US Open after her loss to Ajla Tomljanovic, she remains in discussion. While many consider her the GOAT of women’s tennis, Margaret Court‘s 24 Major single titles are often an obstacle for her. However, to Williams’ credit, she won all of them in the Open Era, unlike the Aussie veteran.
Considered an idol by many players, including both men and women, the legacy of Williams was recently reflected when netball players also picked her. As the Netball Super League is currently being played, some of the top players spoke to BBC Sports to name their dream team.
Manchester Thunder‘s Imogen Allison was one of the stars to reveal her celebrity dream team. She picked the Olympian for the position of wing defense.
The position is considered quite crucial given that the players are allowed to play only in the bottom two-thirds and intercept the opposition’s attackers while distributing passes to their forwards.
In the celebrity dream team, the wing defense would be Serena Williams. Power, communication and all of that personalitySaid Allison.
London Pulse‘s Olivia Tchine also featured in the video and picked pop star Beyonce as one of her dream team members. ‘Queen B’ wasn’t the only singer to feature, as Taylor Swift was picked by Surrey Storm‘s Amy Flanagan. Swift’s height and awesomeness were given as reasons by Flanagan for her choice.
LeBron James also gets a special invite to netball
Netball does look quite similar to basketball, given the end purpose of dropping the ball through the hoop. However, the rules and team setups are quite different between the two sports.
Nevertheless, the ability to drop the ball through the net is essential, and who better than the all-time leading scorer in the NBA, LeBron James? The power forward was picked by Saracens Mavericks‘ Jodie Gibson for the position of goal defense. She even asked the American if he wanted a game of netball.
