World No. 24 and the 20th seed at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, John Isner started his campaign against Enzo Couacaud defeating the Frenchman 6-7(6), 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a rather unexpected long battle of 3 hours and 15 minutes on the Court 18 of the All-England Club.

During the match, Isner fired 54 aces making the best use of his height and the surface offerings to start his campaign in an emphatic manner going into the second round with a lot of confidence and reliability on his own serve which will a big challenge for his next round opponent. The ace count by Isner in the match is the first time since a player has hit 50 aces in a single Grand Slam men’s match with the last player to do so was also Isner hitting 52 aces during his first-round win at the 2020 US Open.

While Isner has been called a serve bot all his career for his incredible serving skills that makes life difficult for his opponent to break him, the American is currently second on the list for most aces hit. With the 54 aces yesterday, Isner now has 13,688 aces to his name, 40 less than Ivo Karlovic‘s all-time record of 13,728 aces.

While Isner has certainly played more matches than the Croatian great, none can deny the brilliance of the American as well. Isner will now take on home favourite and 2-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray in the second round with the Brit coming in with a 4-set win over James Duckworth in what was the last match on Center Court on Day 1 of the 2022 Wimbledon.
