The losing finalist of 2019, Alexander Zverev, begins his campaign against the Russian tennis player Roman Safiullin. The pair recently faced off in the final of ATP 250 Chengdu Open which the German won in 3 sets.

World No.10 Alexander Zverev has shown signs of his best self so far in the Asian Swing. Beginning at the Chengdu Open, Zverev defeated Safiullin 6-7(2),7-6(5),6-3 to win his second title of the year, and 21st overall. At the China Open, Zverev was defeated by his long-time rival, and opponent in the final of 2019 Shanghai Masters, Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final.

At the US Open, the 26-year-old German was knocked out by the two-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in their quarter-final encounter. Zverev put on a gritty display in the round of 16 as he got the better of the newly crowned China Open champion Jannik Sinner. He has an impressive win/loss record for the year – 49/23. The German pro has won 5 Masters titles in addition to the 2018 ATP Finals.

On the other hand, Roman Safiullin, World No.41, started his campaign in style as he got the better of 3-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray in the first round. The Russian defeated the former British No.1 6-3,6-2 to book his spot in the second round. The 26-year-old Russian had his best-ever Grand Slam finish in the quarter-final at the Wimbledon Championships earlier this year. His only tour-level final appearance came at the Chengdu Open last week.

The pair have faced off twice with Zverev winning both encounters.

Zverev, seeded 9th, versus Safiullin, has the potential to be the best second-round encounter if their recent encounter is to go by. The German would look to dominate on his serve and put pressure on Safiullin’s serve. The Russian is vulnerable to hitting double faults, which Zverev would look to capitalize on. Taking into account Zverev’s form it’d be difficult to bet against him.
