Shanghai returns to the ATP calendar as it plays host to the 12th edition of the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, from 4–15 October 2023. This will be the first edition of the tournament since 2019, as the intervening editions were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China, as well as the fallout following the disappearance of the Chinese WTA player Peng Shuai. World No.3 Daniil Medvedev won the last edition of the tournament defeating Alexander Zverev in the final encounter.

Medvedev started his Asian swing on a rather successful note as he made the final of the recently concluded ATP 500 China Open. Jannik Sinner defeated the Russian 7-6(2), 7-6(2) in the final to get his first win over him in 7 attempts. Before that, he was defeated at the same stage of the US Open by World No.1 Novak Djokovic.
