John and Emma

Former world No.1, John McEnroe still believes there is a lot Emma Raducanu can offer to the sport. The British tennis star came into the limelight after winning the U.S. Open in 2021. She was the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era. She defeated Leylah Fernandez in that final and won the title without losing a set throughout the tournament.

Ever since her first Major title, the downfall started and she registered a mediocre 2022 with a 17-19 win-loss record. She never repeated her U.S. Open heroics after. However, the American legend, John McEnroe came in Emma’s defense. He still believes that she can come back to form and compete at the top level.

Speaking to Tennis 365, John said “I think last year was overwhelming, obviously. She has gone through a lot of changes in her life and now she has been struggling with injuries. Everyone in tennis hopes she can deal with what is happening to her and regain the level she showed at the US Open.”

John further elaborated by saying “We all want to see her fit and enjoy the challenge that comes her way, I’m sure she can have a great year. I wish Emma the best. You don’t win a Grand Slam by chance. She’s a great player and she can come back and fight again.”

Emma Raducanu continues to fail at the big stage

Emma Raducanu rose to the top within no time. She had the best graph in her rankings from 2018 to 2021. She had the career best ranking of ten in women’s singles. However, she fell in the same way to play in the Majors as unseeded. Experts and fans believe that she couldn’t handle that fame at a very young age and hence she saw this decline.

The 20-year-old didn’t start the new year any better. She came into the Australian Open 2023 as an unseeded player. She won the first round but fell short in the second after losing to Coco Gauff. Injuries also played a key role in the dip in her form and led to this downfall. John still believes that winning a Grand Slam is never easy and hence she has the potential to win again at that level.
