Serena Williams has defined women’s tennis for more than a decade now. But she has more to her name than 23-grand slams. Williams has been an icon for mothers in the sports industry. She has changed the way people perceive women in sports. Recently she won her first-round match against Danka Kovinvic at the US Open, in high fashion…literally. She wore a custom Nike outfit designed by herself which included 400 hand-set diamonds in black ceramic which spelt ‘Queen’.

This is not the first time she has changed the paradigm for women’s sports attire. During the 2018 French Open, Williams wore a catsuit to prevent blood clots she was experiencing after giving birth. The authorities did not take it well and said it was “too much.” Now, Madison Brengle is speaking out about how the incident positively changed everything for her.

32-year-old Madison Brengle had surgery to remove a cancerous spot on her leg several years ago. She now wears leggings to protect her legs from the sun. She has expressed her admiration for Williams for changing the pattern that women have to wear skirts during matches. She said, “When Serena wore the catsuit at the French Open that year, she changed the rules for us, allowing us to play in pants. I had Melanoma and I wouldn’t be able to play anymore if I couldn’t wear pants.”

She further added, “She’s blazed so many trails, all of the trails, but for me personally, the big one is that I can play in pants now. That has extended my career for a couple of years. For any reason, if you want to cover up, but for me, it’s for sun protection, and I wouldn’t be able to play like this if it wasn’t for her. She has done wonderful things for all of us.”

This revelation certainly adds to Serena Williams‘ legacy which goes beyond her multiple grand slam wins. Currently, Williams is eyeing a record 7th US Open title. She is set to retire after the conclusion of her home tournament.
