Daria Kasatkina is a Russian professional tennis player. She is currently the Russian No. 1 player in singles. She made her top-ten debut in the WTA rankings towards the end of the 2018 season. She has won four WTA Tour titles in singles as well as one title in doubles. Kasatkina began playing tennis at age six at the insistence of her older brother.
She excelled as a junior, winning the European 16s championship and one junior Grand Slam singles title at the 2014 French Open. Kasatkina last played at the 2022 German Cup where she was defeated in the round of 32 by Katerina Siniakova in what was the Russian’s last grasscourt event of the season as she was banned from playing at the 2022 Wimbledon due to her nationality.

The current world No 12 told Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko that she is in a relationship with a woman and found “living in the closet” impossible. Kasatkina, who is not currently based in Russia also posted pictures on Instagram with her girlfriend, the figure skater Natalia Zabiiako. She also spoke against the attitudes toward homosexuality and LGBTQ+ rights in Russia.
“Seriously, if there is a choice, no one would choose to be gay. Why make your life harder, especially in Russia? What’s the point?” she added. Russia’s existing “gay propaganda” law, passed in 2013 is used used to stop gay pride marches and detain gay rights activists. Twitter came in all support for the Russians for coming out as gay some people appreciated her courage to come out as most people from Russia do not usually disclose such things because they fear Russian authorities and their government.
