“She reminds me a lot of Venus” Coco Gauff gets huge praise from coach Rick Macci who predicts multiple Grand Slam wins for the teen
Coco Gauff and Rick Macci
World No. 11 Coco Gauff had a brilliant outing during the Clay season as she reached her first Grand Slam finals despite not a great build-up to the 2022 French Open. The teenager lost the finals to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek who has been flawless this season and won her 35th consecutive match by defeating Gauff in the finals to win her second Grand Slam title.
For Gauff, it was nothing but a great learning experience as she has just turned 18 and already has a couple of years of experience on the Tour and is developing into a better player with every passing tournament. She has already been looked at as the next big thing in American tennis and is backed to be the flagbearer of American tennis in the coming years with her consistent performances.
“There’s no doubt about it”: Rick Macci on Coco Gauff as a future Grand Slam winner
Speaking about Gauff’s rise, Rick Macci, former coach of Venus and Serena Williams who along with Richard Williams taught the two sisters when they were teens, had nothing but praise for Gauff, especially after her finish in the Roland Garros this year. Macci went on to compare Gauff to Venus and it is not a big surprise with Gauff making her Grand Slam main-draw debut with a first-round win over Venus in the 2019 Wimbledon.
“I know Coco and her father, we’re all in Florida. She is the best pure athlete running on the WTA Tour. What that means is when you’re nervous, you can still play offence and defence. She can run, she’s a track star that has a tennis racket in her hand. Gauff reminds me a lot of Venus as far as the strides and the running goes Coco is going to win some Grand Slams, there’s no doubt about it.
“She’s only 18, she’s gonna get better. But to dominate the game, I would like to see her play closer to the baseline, dictate, cut the court, take the ball early, hit the ball cleaner. She counter punches a lot and that’s a tougher way to make a living and to become a champion,” said Macci as per Tennis Infinity.
