Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova were two of the fiercest rivals back in the day. The duo had a quite strained relationship, given their comments on one another in the media. Maria Sharapova criticized Serena Williams for her comments on an extremely sensitive situation back in 2013.
Serena Williams made some surprising comments on the rape of a 16-year old girl by two high school American football players. The American tennis legend was forced to apologize for her shocking comments, however, Maria Sharapova did not hold back in her analysis of the situation.
Maria Sharapova stated that Serena Williams should instead just stick to speaking about her achievements on court, rather than sparking such a controversial subject.
“I was definitely sad to hear what she had to say about the whole case. I just think she should be talking about her accomplishments, her achievements, rather than everything else that’s just getting attention and controversy,” said Sharapova.

“She shouldn’t have put herself in that position,” Serena Williams apologized for her shocking comments
Serena Williams indirectly blamed the 16-year-old for being irresponsible with her drinking. This comment did not go down with the audiences, as the American star later issued an apology on the same.
“I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you — don’t take drinks from other people,” Serena Williams had said.
“She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different,” she added.
In the past, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova have also taken jibe at each other’s love lives. The 23-time major champion commented on Maria Sharapova’s ex-relationship with Bulgarian tennis star, Grigor Dimitrov. However, the Russian did not hold back either, and hit back with Serena Williams’ relationship with her coach, Patrick Mouratoglo
“If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids,” said Sharapova in the same interview.
“Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much in her life, many positives, and I think that’s what it should be about,” the Russian added.
