Rafael Nadal, Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek has won four consecutive tournaments in 2022, and one of them is a rare tournament that the great Rafael Nadal has never won. Swiatek started her cinderella run with a tournament victory in Doha. She came to the United States and conquered the Indian Wells and the Miami Open, a rare tournament that her idol Nadal had not won. Swiatek then transitioned to the clay court and won the WTA Stuttgart Open.

She took a break for a week and returned to Rome to defend her Italian Open title before the final stop at the Roland-Garros. Swiatek is a big favorite for the French Open as Nadal used to be in the glory days. Even with age catching up to him, Nadal is still one of the players who might easily win the title for the 14th time this year. It is well known that Swiatek is a huge fan of Rafa, and she has done well to earn her idol’s respect.

Nadal and Swiatek have met each other many times. Iga was famously present as a spectator in Rafa’s Australian Open 2022 win. They also shared some talk recently in between practice sessions. Swiatek recently also visited the Rafael Nadal Academy for some training during her break. Her dominant form and great mental fortitude has impressed her idol. Rafa said:

“She’s doing amazing things. Playing amazing & winning every single event she played, I think the last four in a row. Winning Indian Wells and Miami in a row is something difficult. Just happy for her. She’s very spontaneous and natural. It is good to have good ppl like her having success.”

Swiatek is a colossal challenge for anyone who wants to win both Rome and Roland-Garros. She is a huge favorite to blow over the competition, and anything else would be an upset of sizeable proportion.
