World number 5, Ons Jabeur has had a striking season. She is one of the strongest contenders at this year’s US Open. Jabeur was already a sensation after 2022 Wimbledon even though she lost to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the finals. She has become an inspiration for Women all around the world but especially for Arab women where a sports career is a long shot for them.

The Tunisian tennis star became the first ever Arab-born tennis player, man or women to break into the top 10 world rankings. Elena Rybakina after defeating Jabeur in the Wimbledon Finals praised her tenacity. She said, “You’re an inspiration, not only for the juniors but for everybody.”

You can’t limit her to just inspiring women in the Arab region: Venus Williams

When Ons Jabeur arrived in Tunisia after Wimbledon, she was honored with the National Order of Merit from President Kais Saied. What Jabeur has done for Arab Women is no small feat. She has broken stereotypes and set an example for women all around. Jabeur is an advocate for women in sports and how they should be provided with a wider platform.

Seven-time grand slam champion Venus Williams had nothing but kind words for Jabeur. She said, “You can’t limit her to just inspiring women in the Arab region. She’s inspiring all kinds of women, including me.”

Ons Jabeur lost to Petra Kvitova in three sets in the round of 16 at Cincinnati Masters. But her form in the 2022 season is looking strong. She won the Madrid Open after defeating Jessica Pegula, 7-5, 0-6, 6-2. She also won the Berlin Open finals after Belinda Bencic pulled out of the match. In addition to this, she reached the finals of the Italian Open but lost to world number 1 Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

What people are witnessing is a change in perspective towards women in sports. Jabeur has build a foundation for Arab women to be more vocal about their interest in sports. Ons Jabeur was also honored by the Tunisian Postal Service as they created a stamp as a tribute to her career so far. All eyes will be on Jabeur in the US Open as she’s coming in with great confidence after finishing second at Wimbledon.
