Venus Williams and Serena Williams
Former World No. 1 Serena Williams is considered to be retired from the sport. The 23-time Grand Slam winner has continued dropping hints that she isn’t actually retired and the fans could see her back in action on the Tour and also at the 2023 Australian Open.
Serena said goodbye to the fans after her third-round defeat at the 2022 US Open against Ajla Tomljanovic. While she had earlier announced her intention to ‘evolve’ ahead from tennis, she has kept the fans on their toes with constant hints over a possible comeback.
Serena Williams reveals Venus Williams is trying to get her out of retirement
While Serena is believed to have retired, her elder sister, Venus Williams, continues to remain an active player on the Tour despite having turned 42 in June this year. Venus, a 7-time singles major winner has denied any plans of retirement and has rather urged Serena to not step away herself.
Serena recently made an appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ where she touched upon various topics including her retirement, and her possible comeback taking inspiration from NFL legend Tom Brady and also opened up about Venus’ retirement plans.
“She’s not done yet. This is just me. She’s trying at me but I am like no,” said Serena adding to the host’s statement where she said that Venus is dragging you back on the court. With Serena and Venus teaming up in the Doubles as well at the US Open, one can’t deny that there’s certainly a chance of Serena’s return.
Venus and Serena’s former coach Rick Macci also emphasised that the two sisters might actually continue playing in Doubles in the near future assuring fans that the Williams duo isn’t yet done with the sport despite having spent near to 3 decades on the court since turning Pro.
Serena has however confirmed that unlike many legends such as Steffi Graf or Pete Sampras, she won’t be completely gone away from the sport and will remain active in tennis but the capacity in which she’ll work is yet to be decided by the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
