Simona Halep, the Romanian tennis player, was a force to be reckoned with two Grand Slam singles titles at the 2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon. However, despite showcasing great gameplay, the 32-year-old has been banned for 4 years after being caught doping at the 2022 US Open.
After she was given the ban, the Romanian tried to prove herself not guilty, but her efforts were in vain until her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, took responsibility for the incident while clearly stating that his player did not have any hand in it.
Now with the newfound information, the scripts have flipped, and the Romanian does have a chance to prove herself not guilty and fight to play tennis again.
Recently, in an interview with Euronews Romania, she revealed that she had split up with Patrick and will use him as a defense in court, where the coach will have to acknowledge that he is guilty of providing her with the collagen, which had the banned substance.
Now the two-time Grand Slam winner has to skip the Australian Open to plead her case in court at the start of February.
Simona Halep disheartened with her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, splits up with the Frenchman
After the doping case progressed throughout the months, French coach Patrick Mouratoglou pleaded guilty to having unknowingly given his player Simona Halep the collagen-containing substances, which saw her 4-year ban.
Recently, Simona Halep spoke about the unfortunate incident and how it completely broke her trust in the organization, resulting in the split-up. Additionally, the 32-year-old also said that she would not be able to trust her ex-coach in the future and would now have to use them as a defense statement in court.
It’s true that he went out. I wish he could have done that a little bit earlier. I have stopped working with the academy since a while already. So I always trusted this and my trust is broken a little bit right now. And in the future, I don’t know how it’s going to be if I can trust again.Said Halep on Eurosport Romania.
If the ban holds, then the Romanian will be unable to compete until 2026, which would mean that she will return at the age of 36, resulting in problems concerning fitness and form.
With that being said, Halep will have to wait for the date given by the CAS and then try to plead and case and get out of the ban to try and compete on the court after a year.
