Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep was slapped with a four-year ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after failing an anti-doping test. Although Halep was not playing on the tour due to her provisional suspension since October 2022, a final decision was made a couple of days back. However, the player has refused all such claims saying she has not consumed any prohibited substance intentionally. 

The Simona Halep case has garnered significant attention with the likes of Serena Williams and renowned coach Patrick Mouratoglou as well as Rennae Stubbs reacting to it. There is a whole camp built with one section supporting and standing in solidarity with the Romanian player while the other pulls her down.

Amid this tug-of-war, fans have started taking part in this debate on social media. Interestingly, a few tennis fans have criticized Halep for not taking responsibility. They even cited Maria Sharapova’s example of how the Russian had accepted that she consumed meldonium legally. Meanwhile, one user called Halep a crack-head.

Fans show no sympathy to Simona Halep

Simona Halep has been going through a lot in the past few months. The Romanian had issued multiple statements for the delay in the hearing of her case. Now, as she has been handed a four-year suspension, Halep has refused to accept it. While some tennis fans are sympathizing with the Romanian, a big section of fans feel that Halep deserved such a severe punishment.

Quite a few tennis fans remembered how Halep was so vocal about Maria Sharapova’s case and said that it was all coming to bite her back. It is worth mentioning that Simona Halep had said that a player who was banned for doping should not get any help. Recalling this statement from Halep, fans refused to show any sympathy to the Romanian.

Now, as Simona Halep has said that she will appeal against this decision from ITIA, it will be interesting to see what turn this case takes.
