“Sisters that are dynamic as a duo but just as iconic individuals!” Steve Weissman wants Venus and Serena Williams to play together for one last time
Serena Williams announced her retirement from tennis recently and stated that she would hang up her racket following the US Open. The 40-year-old is recognized as one of the greatest tennis players to ever pick up a racket, and during her career, she has won 23 grand slam titles. Serena visited Wimbledon this season for the first time in a year, and once again, talk shifted to her highly anticipated 24th major triumph. Serena has been seeking the elusive 24th major victory for the past five years but to no avail.
Venus Williams, Serena’s elder sister, is a legend in her own right. The 42-year-old has won seven single Grand Slams throughout the course of her career, and like Serena, she serves as an inspiration and a role model for many people across the globe. Tomorrow at the Citi Open, she will play on the court for the first time recently.
Journalist Steve Weissman calls for the Williams sisters’ return to doubles
Steve Weissman, a well-known American sports analyst, recently discussed Venus and Serena Williams and expressed his wish to watch the iconic team play doubles “one more time” at the US Open. Serena Williams, who will turn 41 next month, recently announced that she would retire after the US Open this year, citing the desire to branch out beyond tennis. Venus, her older sister, who turned 42 this year, is certainly nearing the end of her professional career.
Steve Weissman insisted in an interview with “The Rally” that the Williams sisters should reunite for one more Grand Slam match by citing their dominant doubles record. “I would really like to see right now is Serena and Venus play one more time doubles together at the US Open. They’ve won 14 Major doubles titles together, in fact they have never lost a Major doubles final when they played 14 and 0,” he said.
Weissman noted a passage in the article where Serena used a proverb from Venus to illustrate how they share the same unflappable outlook. “You know, so Serena said in her article that Venus once said that when someone says that ‘you can’t do something it’s because they can’t do it but I did do it and so can you.’ And so I think Venus has that same mindset, as long as she is having fun, why not play forever right?”
