American tennis star Sloane Stephens caught everyone’s attention as she took a sushi-smoothie break during her third-round match at the 2024 Australian Open. The 30-year-old left everyone shocked as she decided to munch on sushi and paired it up with a smoothie midway through her match. While the chair umpire was not too impressed, fans found it funny.
The pictures of Stephens’ mid-match snack went viral on social media with fans gushing over the choice of food. While fans discussed if it was an appropriate choice or not, Stephens defended herself explaining the reason behind munching on sushi.
The American revealed that it was not her choice to have sushi and a smoothie midway through her match but rather it was a compulsion for the 30-year-old. Stephens revealed that her team could only find this snack as she asked for something following a grueling first set against Anna Kalinskaya.
We had a long first set, I was hungry and this is all my team could find.Sloane Stephens explained as fans questioned her choice of mid-match snacks.
It is worth mentioning that this sushi-smoothie break caused problems for Stephens as she got a code violation for running out of time.
Sushi-smoothie combo helps Sloane Stephens for a while before she goes down
The unconventional mid-match snack helped Sloane Stephens for a while before she eventually perished to Russian Anna Kalinskaya. After claiming the first set in a tiebreaker, Stephens lost the second set 1-6. However, the American star came back strong as she broke Kalinskaya’s serve and opened up a 3-1 lead, but she was unable to maintain her advantage.
The 30-year-old American eventually lost the third set 4-6 and got knocked out of the year’s first Grand Slam tournament. Nevertheless, this was Stephens’ best performance in Melbourne in the last five years. The American used to get knocked out in the first round itself since 2020.
This time, she beat Olivia Gadecki in the first round and 14th seed Daria Kasatkina in the second round to advance to the third round. Stephens had a good start against Kalinskaya as well. However, the Russian youngster upped her game after the first set to clinch the match.
