Sloane Stephens’ sushi and smoothie order during her third-round match at the Australian Open will go down as one of the all-time sports power snacks.
The American star needed the snack energy after losing the second set against Anna Kalinskaya 6-1. The 2017 US Open champion had edged the first set 7-6 after a tiebreaker, but in the second set, the performance bar dropped as she was running out of strength.
She then ordered sushi and a smoothie to power her back into the game. Much similar to the former World No. 1 Serena Williams, who suddenly needed a caffeine fix after losing the first round 6-0 to Flavia Pennetta in the 2015 Hopman Cup.
The former tennis professional had thought that the expresso shot would give her the boost of energy she needed to turn the match around, and remarkably, she was right.
After the desired coffee, Williams went on to win the next set 6-3, 6-0, to the shock of the audience after a poor display in the first set.
However, for Sloane Stephens, things didn’t turn out that well. The umpire wasn’t happy with it because of her lengthy sit-down between games to try to eat enough sushi. She tried to regain her composure, but ultimately victory was far from her as she lost the third set.
Sloane Stephens crashed out of the Australian Open
Sloane Stephens suffered a shocking scare following her loss to Anna Kaliskaya in the third round of the Australian Open.
The American threw away her early lead for the Russian to come back and seal her place in the fourth round. The 25-year-old Anna fell short in the first tiebreaker before outclassing the American 6-7(8), 6-1, 6-4 at the Show Court Arena.
The former World No. 3 has struggled to get past the third round in recent years, with her best finish being a semifinal defeat coming over a decade ago. Russian Kalinskaya would head into the fourth round for the first time in any Grand Slam tournament after a significant victory.
The 25-year-old saved 12 of 13 break points during the match and earned 46 wins. She will face the winner of the match between Anna Blinkova and No. 26 seed Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round.
In the first round of the tournaments, Sloane Stephens looked impressive after defeating Australian Olivia Gadecki 6-3, 6-1. The World No. 44 also beat Russian Daria Kasatkina 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round.
