Alexander Zverev had a second first-round exit on the trot as the German bowed out of the Japan Open after losing to Jordan Thompson on Monday. The world no.9 lost in straight sets as Zverev failed to seal any of the three break points in the opening game. Thompson took advantage of Zverev’s foul play as the Australian took the game home 6-3, 6-4.
This was the German’s second first-round defeat on the trot as Zverev has lost his opening matches in Shanghai and in Tokyo now. This shabby performance from the German attracted some criticism from the fans who celebrated his defeat on social media.
A handful of fans blasted the German for his inconsistent showing at the tournaments. Meanwhile, a few enjoyed his poor run. “Always good when Zverev loses,” wrote one user on X. Check out other reactions from fans to Alexander Zverev losing his first-round match at the Japan Open.
It is worth mentioning that Alexander Zverev is disliked by a section of fans for his history with his ex-girlfriends. Also, the German claiming to be a part of the new Big 3 and not backing it with a Grand Slam title has drawn flak for Zverev from all corners.
Alexander Zverev spoils his plans for ATP Finals qualification
With this defeat in Tokyo and the one in Shanghai a few days back, Alexander Zverev has spoiled his chances for ATP Finals qualification. The German has 3415 points in the race to Turin rankings and the others around him are gaining momentum. Hubert Hurcakz has really pushed his case by winning the Shanghai Masters.
Although Zverev has a few more tournaments at his disposal, the 25-year-old might fall out of the race if he fails in one more tournament. There is only one major tournament left on the tour- the ATP Paris Masters. And Zverev’s chances are slim considering all the heavyweights including Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz will be there fighting for the trophy.
It is to be seen if the German manages to accumulate some crucial points in the next few tournaments or if Zverev will be pushed to the edge by the others around him.
