Sorana Cirstea recently reacted to the condition of the courts in the Grand Stand Arena during the 2023 Italian Open. Sorana Cirstea faced Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the tournament. Sorana Cirstea ended up losing the game.
Cirstea despite losing the first set managed to win the second set and level the scores. She ended up losing at the end but during the first set of the game she expressed her frustration to the chair umpire.“It is very bad. No but this is the condition of the court. No all over the court it is breaking. I don’t understand how they make us play on this court. It is unplayable,” said Sorana Cirstea.
The video that recently emerged shows Sorana Cirstea using a cuss word to express her frustration. Sorana Cirstea felt that the court was unplayable and was confused about why they are being made to play in such conditions. It is a big tournament after all. She also pointed out that the court was breaking all over.
Sorana Cirstea is not the only player questioning the quality of the court in the Italian Open. Even Novak Djokovic spoke about the poor conditions of the court and mentioned that more games should have been played on them before the tournament began.
”And I think the other year I was asking and they were not playing much at all… um, they played pre-qualies so if you don’t use the court uh and you have a clay court uh, these things happen, you know. The court breaks you have many holes you have uneven surface uh really bad bounces a lot of clay.”, said Novak Djokovic. The courts have been hard to play on for the players and are altering games in a bad way.
