“Spoilt kid, needs to grow up” Twitteratis rebuke Holger Rune’s cold handshake after his loss to Casper Ruud
Holger Rune, Casper Ruud
Casper Ruud the eight seed in the French Open 2022, finally got the third round monkey off his back. He has performed admirably to enter his maiden Grand Slam semifinal in Paris. Ruud got through a bunch of talented opponents including the legendary Jo-wilfried Tsonga, the young Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, Lorenzo Sonego, and Hubert Hurkacz.
Casper’s quarterfinal opponent was a huge surprise. He faced an 18-year-old Holger Rune, who managed to upstage Stefanos Tsitsipas to enter the quarterfinal of the French Open. Rune had already defied expectations to defeat Denis Shapovalov in the first round and then in the fourth round, caused the biggest upset of the season, defeating Tsitsipas in four sets. He was up against Casper Ruud in an all-Nordic battle for the spot in the semifinals.
Ruud defeated Rune 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(7-2), 6-3 as he entered the semifinals at Phillipe-Chatrier. The match was not only spectacular, it was also eventful. Rune caused quite a stir in match, calling chair umpire for very obvious outside calls, screaming at his box and he also managed to upset Ruud, who is one of the best behaved players on the tour.
Holger Rune criticized for his lack of respect for the game.
Ruud called out Rune on his incessant need of calling the chair umpires for even the most obvious outside calls, to which Rune told him to shut up. This incident occurred twice in the match after which Ruud let it go. Rune followed this unpleasant behavior with a very cold ‘fly-by’ handshake after the match. Ruud shook his head at the manner in which Rune conducted himself. Twitter was angry with Rune’s behavior and they bashed the teenager.
Though some people tried to come up with a defense for Rune, saying he was young and disappointed, it was flimsy considering the rash behavior the teenager showed during the match, his reply to Ruud and his after match handshake, just sealed the deal. Rune would like to contemplate on his behavior and Ruud will get a shot at his first Grand Slam final at the French Open 2022.
